Dog Commands

Sit: Dog is to sit squarely with butt completely touching the floor.

Stay: Stay right there.

Wait: Wait for my next command.

Come! or Come-by: Come to me ~pronto!

Off: Get off. (Get off the sofa, get off the bed, get off of me…)

Down: Lay down.

Halt!: Stop all movement, NOW!

Leave it: Do not touch, eat, sniff, chase etc. (Whatever the item dog is interested in.)

Drop it: Drop whatever is in your mouth.

Uh-uh: Used instead of “no”, which can be confused with “GO” for racing & competing dogs.

Crate-up: Used to get a dog in its crate.

Hurry!: Used to pick up the pace when walking.

Slow: Used to slow down the pace when walking.

Forward: To get the dog moving in a forward motion.

Back: To back-up or go back.

NOW!: Used in conjunction with another command, when the dog isn’t listening well.
(i.e.; Leave it ~NOW, Come ~NOW, Crate-up ~NOW, etc.)

Quiet: Used to hush the dog.

Watch me: Used to make eye contact with the dog, to get its attention.

Gee: Go right.

Haw: Go left.

Hey!: Can be used to distract a dog that’s being naughty.

NoBiting: (One word). Stop biting.

NoDigging: (One word) Stop digging.
Remember, we really don’t want to use the word “NO”.

Heel: Dog should be on your left, near your knee, no pulling allowed.

Easy: When dog becomes too exuberant. Calm down.

Get Busy: Get busy and go pee or poo.

All Done, or Relax: Used to end a long stay, or when training session is over.

Good Boy/Girl!: Always used right after a command has been performed correctly.
It is a good rule of thumb to do 10 ‘attaboys’ to every 1 correction.

Excuse me: Used by humans to get past dog(s) blocking their way. If need be, using your
shin- gently nudge the dog in the shoulder or hips. Push lightly in the direction in which
you want to go, while saying the command.
