Dog Commands
Sit: Dog is to sit squarely with butt completely touching the floor.
Stay: Stay right there.
Wait: Wait for my next command.
Come! or Come-by: Come to me ~pronto!
Off: Get off. (Get off the sofa, get off the bed, get off of me…)
Down: Lay down.
Halt!: Stop all movement, NOW!
Leave it: Do not touch, eat, sniff, chase etc. (Whatever the item dog is interested in.)
Drop it: Drop whatever is in your mouth.
Uh-uh: Used instead of “no”, which can be confused with “GO” for racing & competing dogs.
Crate-up: Used to get a dog in its crate.
Hurry!: Used to pick up the pace when walking.
Slow: Used to slow down the pace when walking.
Forward: To get the dog moving in a forward motion.
Back: To back-up or go back.
NOW!: Used in conjunction with another command, when the dog isn’t listening well.
(i.e.; Leave it ~NOW, Come ~NOW, Crate-up ~NOW, etc.)
Quiet: Used to hush the dog.
Watch me: Used to make eye contact with the dog, to get its attention.
Gee: Go right.
Haw: Go left.
Hey!: Can be used to distract a dog that’s being naughty.
NoBiting: (One word). Stop biting.
NoDigging: (One word) Stop digging.
Remember, we really don’t want to use the word “NO”.
Heel: Dog should be on your left, near your knee, no pulling allowed.
Easy: When dog becomes too exuberant. Calm down.
Get Busy: Get busy and go pee or poo.
All Done, or Relax: Used to end a long stay, or when training session is over.
Good Boy/Girl!: Always used right after a command has been performed correctly.
It is a good rule of thumb to do 10 ‘attaboys’ to every 1 correction.
Excuse me: Used by humans to get past dog(s) blocking their way. If need be, using your
shin- gently nudge the dog in the shoulder or hips. Push lightly in the direction in which
you want to go, while saying the command.
